7 Reasons Why You Should Experience Working Overseas

7 Reasons Why You Should Experience Working Overseas

In the year 2012 I experienced working and living on the other side of the world and it was the best decision in my life. Here’s why…

You gain new skills and experience

It opened my eyes to a complete different style of living and working.  In my opinion the work/life culture in Britain is totally different from New Zealand.   By learning another cultures customs you get to learn a new set of skills and it’s great experience for the future.  You may develop a great new working style that you can use to impress your potential bosses!

You gain a huge amount of confidence.

By working overseas you have to learn to make a new home for yourself, make new friends and new habits.  By putting yourself out there you will gain a lot of self-confidence.   You learn the most from uncomfortable situations so cherish those moments!  I used to be a very shy person but now I have no trouble striking up a conversation with a stranger or asking for directions.

You make new friends that are based all over the world.

In the future you will no longer have to pay for accommodation because you will always have a couch to stay on if you need one.  It cuts the cost of accommodation in the future right down!

Getting to know one city really well in another country is amazing.

It means you will never have one home anymore.  You have the ideal place to escape and unwind when you most need it, the perfect excuse for a holiday!

Having a base by working in one place is great for weekend travelling and for holidays.

Everywhere you head off to, even if it’s the next town, will feel like a new place so enjoy it and do lots of trips in your time off!

Bragging rights!

Oh, you know that time you packed up, moved to another country and made an awesome life for yourself.  That memory will stick, so be prepared to get some dirty looks when you brag about it to your old friends.  You have permission to brag my friend!

Lastly it will be the most rewarding thing you will ever do.

Not only will it be rewarding to you but it will also be the best investment you will have purchased.  Living and working overseas has given me some lifelong lessons.  Travelling may be expensive in your eyes but it will be something you will remember forever, unlike an Xbox you may have for a few years.  These memories you will be able to laugh at, cry at and tell your grandchildren when you’re old and crusty.

If you haven’t heard of him already, check out Turner from Around the world in 80 jobs.  His journey around the world from tequila harvesting in Mexico to being a street tout in Thailand is inspiring in so many different ways.  He really has done it all!

Buy a ticket and go, I dare you!!  Get travel insurance when you go, don’t be dumb.  I recommend World Nomads as they are a reputable and reasonably priced company that you can get hold of 24/7.  Read my post on what you should look for in a travel insurance policy if you are confused.  If you need somewhere to crash when first getting to your destination then I recommend Agoda and Booking.com.  They have amazing deals and you can get huge discounts.  If you don’t want to pay I don’t blame you!  Check out Trusted House Sitters, you can get all your accommodation for free!

Very informative post..there’s a lot of debate that goes on in mind regarding whether it’s worth it, when it comes to leaving your country and working overseas. One thing that I like about it is that it’s making the world more and more cosmopolitan, one step at a time, as more and more people opt to work overseas.

Say something...
