Here are some great ideas for places if you are needing a weekend trip away from the UK. You should know by now I only go to places that are cheap to get to so, if you are on a budget then read on…
Barcelona is a great place with loads of things to do and a generally fun atmosphere. Good food, great nightlife and perfect if you’re out to get a midnight tattoo. This fun-loving city offers a great free walking tour (you usually tip the guide instead) taking you to all of Gaudi’s (the famous architect) buildings including the Sagrada Familia. You can choose other walking tours around Barcelona as well! I paid £30 return for my flight from London! Not bad for a wee holiday in Spain! Not to mention the people are really good looking so people watching has to be in your plan!
Dublin is a fun idea for a getaway for the weekend. The Irish are lively and every time I have been there I have always had the best nights out. You can find hostels for about £10 a night, more money to save for drinks at the pub I say! Take a camera so you can re-live those moments you forgot – or wish to forget anyway. I once brought tickets to Dublin for £15 one way so keep an eye out on Ryanair or Easyjets websites. If you want to try something new you can always catch the train and then ferry over to Dublin for a different experience! There is also a free walking tour available which is full of fascinating facts about this city. Ask your hostel for more information!
Munich is always a good idea. With Germany comes good sausage, good beer and a good time. I can recommend the famous Hofbräuhaus. It is the most popular so be sure to get in early. Enjoy a great night of good food, massive pretzels with a traditional German band playing in the background. Prepare to clunk your steins very VERY hard and have a great sing and dance with the locals! If you want to learn about World War 2 I highly suggest visiting the Dachau Nazi concentration camp. It’s a very heartbreaking place where you can pay your respects to all the people who lost their lives there. The Germans really love people learning about the War and they want to educate people about their infamous history. I really enjoyed Munich, I thought it had a great atmosphere and was very historical.
Florence, Italy is always more beautiful in the summer. Opt to stay out of the city and instead go to the Tuscany countryside to have a more relaxed holiday. Beware that the summer does get ridiculously hot and busy so make sure you time it well! Head there before the end of July or in September. The architecture in Florence is stunning with lots of good markets, gelato and beautiful buildings. What more could you ask for? Oh, I have also found the best place for you to have gelato.
Switzerland is so picturesque in all seasons! In winter the hills are covered with snow but it is just as beautiful in the summer and not to mention the flights are cheaper. Instead of snow capped peaks you get a green lush outlook which makes for fairytale-like photographs. Switzerland isn’t cheap in terms of cost of living but it is a beautiful country that you have to visit some point in your life. Incase you cared, the most expensive McDonalds I have ever been to was in Switzerland. Don’t forget to pick up your Swiss Army pocket knife!
These are just some of the weekend getaways you could jet off to and that I can personally recommend to visit. This year I am hoping to cross off my list some northern countries like Iceland and Norway. Have you been to some good weekend locations? If you are needing flights check out Skyscanner. If you are looking for some accommodation then check out Agoda and Hostelworld. They are all really good sites to use!
