Anxiety is hard to deal with at the best of times, but especially if you are travelling to new places! I live with a mild case of anxiety which can spark at any time and especially around exciting or stressful times. I have spent a lot of time and put a lot of thought into this post. Everyone has their own way of dealing with it and I just want to point out I’m not a master at dealing with anxiety but I would like to share with you some ways I think could potentially help if you feel a little bit of anxiety while you’re travelling.
Bring wipes. Not to wipe your
butt, but to wipe your face with! Feeling refreshed is great if you’re feeling trapped and gross. The fact I can just wipe my face and feel a million times better is so convenient, especially while trapped on a 24-hour flight.
Bring a small throw or a really comfy jumper with you that you can snuggle into if you are needing some soothing. Also, remember to wear loose and the softest clothes you can find. Who cares if you look like you just rolled out of bed! Try to recreate the feeling when you are in your own home and feeling comfortable.
Control your breathing. If I’m on an aeroplane, the easiest way I combat my anxiety is through breathing exercises. Inhaling as much oxygen into your lungs and then breathing out as hard as you can. I find this one better when closing my eyes too. You could even try do a little bit of meditating on the plane. Maybe try this when everyone is asleep. Put some headphones in, listen to some beach sounds or other relaxing noises rather than an aeroplane engine.
Take off your shoes! Probably the number one thing I do when I hop on a plane. Taking off my shoes feels like I’m free and adds to that feeling of being at home for some weird reason! Let me know in the comments if you feel the same too.
Have rescue remedy on hand. Rescue remedy is an essential if you’re dealing with any type of anxiety or just not feeling 100%. I try to keep all my medical needs natural so rescue remedy is a perfect solution for me!
Think of your destination! Get excited and start making a few little plans about what you are going to do when you hop off the plane. Write a mini bucket list or read some of your travel guide to get a head start on your destination!
Watch a familiar TV series or do something that is familiar to take your mind off things. I feel watching inbetweeners cheers me up and gets me in a great mood! If you haven’t seen it then you have been living under a rock.
Probably the best advice is to sleep! Sleep as long as you can so you can arrive fresh and rearing to go. If I don’t get sleep on the plane I get very grumpy and just want to hop into bed when I get to the other end, which isn’t fun at all.
I hope this helped just one of you! This is a post for people who feel a very mild case of anxiety if travelling makes them feel anxious and nervous – this is not advice for severe cases of anxiety.
