Located in the depths of Mayfair is a chic and sophisticated award-winning hangout called Polo Bar, situated in the Westbury Hotel in central London. It prides itself on providing a stylish atmosphere for its customers to dive into its mouth-watering cocktails, champagne and a selection of food that is available.
I was invited by the Westbury Hotel to come and experience it for myself.
I was greeted by our waiter Boris and taken to my table to start the tasting experience which started off with 3 different snacks while waiting for our cocktails to be made. We were served with the signature cocktail of the Polo Bar, the ‘Pearl Gem’, plus I got to taste ‘Pomegranate Deluxe’ too.
My favourite cocktail of the night was the Pearl Gem as I love sweet cocktails that have a dash of lime to balance out the sweetness. Its gin infused with Blend 68 tea, lychee, lime, sugar and topped with champagne and pineapple foam. I can highly recommend this one!
The Pomegranate Deluxe was also very tasty and was made of gin, elderflower, lemon, champagne and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice. This was a very fresh cocktail with a twist of sweetness and bitterness from the elderflower. They were both fantastic cocktails.
Whilst sipping my cocktails I was served with nibbles. It was beautifully presented and Boris went through every dish with care. Boris advised I tried the buttermilk chicken first, which was coated in a crispy spiced crumb served with a grilled corn and ranch dressing. The chicken was so succulent and definitely set the bar high for my taste buds.
We then moved on to the tasty spring-rolls which are filled with confit duck, spring onion and a drizzle of plum sauce. They were cooked to perfection with the shell being crispy, just like a good spring roll should be, and the filling beautifully melted in my mouth.
Next was the panko crusted prawns. I am really fussy when it comes to seafood as it has to be cooked perfectly for me to touch it, but this was incredible. The prawns were coated in panko breadcrumbs, which gave them a nice crunch and it was served with a sweet chilli dip.
The most creative dish, in my opinion, was the broad bean and fontina cups. I have never seen something like this before. Even the cup is edible as it’s made with beans, which were filled with peas, fontina cheese and mint. Although it was a bit difficult to eat, I was very impressed by this dish!
The last dish was salmon that had been marinated in sake served with wasabi mayonnaise, keta caviar and watercress. The salmon just melted in my mouth, it was so tender. I loved how the cocktails paired well with the food and I think all the flavours really complemented each other.
We were then served with the second serving of cocktails. The first was called ‘Delightful’ and was a little unusual when you heard the ingredients but it was actually divine. Made with Pisco ABA and shaken with Cloudy Bay wine from New Zealand (woohoo!) with lemon juice, egg white and home-made lavender and vanilla syrups.
The last cocktail was whisky-based, which I wasn’t a fan of simply because I don’t like the taste of whisky, but it would be a favourite with whisky lovers I’m sure!
While we had our second round of cocktails the waiter brought out dessert, which was lemon meringue cones with lemon curd, raspberry jam and meringue. I would have to say this dessert was in the top 3 best desserts I have ever tried in my lifetime, so I highly recommend ordering that if you come to the Polo Bar. The final touch to my experience was little chocolate balls filled with mousse, simply delicious!
It’s no wonder that the Polo Bar has been named London’s bar of the year (2014) and more recently it was recognised as the best hotel bar in London. Make sure you make the effort to visit this luxurious bar. They also serve classic meals such as the Polo burger, fish and chips, Shetland scallops and other delicious meals. I would definitely come back here for the cocktails as they were really the highlight. Oh, and those meringue cones I am still dreaming about!
