Let’s get to know each other a little bit better!

Top 3 places you have been to?

This is a hard one, but here we go.  India, it can be beautiful, ugly, crazy and calm all at the same time.  Tokyo, Japan because it’s just plain crazy and bizarre! Albania as a whole is an untouched and beautifully hidden destination amongst Europe.  I loved it so much that I currently live there!  Myanmar would be my last pick as the culture there is so interesting and very different from their other Southeast Asia neighbours.

Cheapest places you have been to?

India, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia & Albania

What’s your story?

Read it here.

What camera do you use?

I own a Canon 1300D DSLR and a GoPro Hero 5+

What’s up with your name?  So my full name is Anita Hendrieka Dykstra. Obviously, Anita Hendrieka are my first names.  I love my names so I really wanted to use them for my brand.  I am half Dutch which is why it might look complicated.  If you’re wondering how to pronounce it, it is said Hen-dre-ka.

How often do you blog?  I try to blog twice a week usually on a Monday evening (UK time) and a Thursday evening (UK time).  Sometimes I experiment with what times work best with posting so occasionally the days can vary, but I do always try to blog twice a week.

Are you a full-time traveller?  Yes, I’m a full-time traveller.  I currently base myself in Albania but originally I’m from New Zealand

Goals for this year and your ultimate goal?  My goal for this year was to travel to the Middle East and the Philippines, which I can now tick off!  My other goal was to base myself somewhere which I have also achieved as I am currently living in Albania!  My ultimate goal would be to travel to every country in the world but I have no time-frame for that as I like to travel slowly.

Are you rich ’cause you must have to be if you’re travelling all the time?   Arggggh nope, and I hate these assumptions which is why I included this question.  I’m actually very poor because I choose to spend my money on experiences instead of materialistic things.  Travelling brings me happiness, so I choose to work my butt off, save, and then spend it all.  To travel you don’t have to be rich, you just have to be smart.  Read my post on ‘How to get rich’ and you will understand!

Are you a real person? Yup, I am! A great one as well!

Where do you come from? I was born in a little town called Carterton, New Zealand.  I grew up on a sheep farm (typical kiwi).

What’s on your bucket list?

Ohhh well that list is absolutely massive!  Instead of me explaining everything, head to my Pinterest Bucket list board.  My top thing on my bucket list is to visit every country in the world.

What inspired you to do this blog?

Gala Darling.  I remember the day I started it, I was 18, living in a flat with my friends and studying interior design at the time.  I watched this documentary on Gala Darling and decided that I wanted to try this blogging phenomenon.  I found blogging as a way out for what was going on in my life at the time and I loved focusing on something creative.  I have always been a really shy person, so I felt scared to promote it in any way because I felt embarrassed.  I actually started Anita Hendrieka as a D.I.Y and lifestyle blog.  When I moved to the UK in 2012 I decided the lifestyle part wasn’t what I felt passionate about, and decided to make it a travel blog.

When did you start this blog?

Well. I started it in 2011, but Anita Hendrieka turned into a travel blog in 2012 when I moved to England!

What are your 3 favourite blogs?

Obviously Gala Darling, The Londoner and Just one way ticket.  Check out my Travel Resources page for more of my favourite travel bloggers!

What is the coolest thing you have done?

It’s so hard to think of just one moment so my two favourite moments so far would be walking through Petra, Jordan and also just sitting and watching daily life in Varanasi in India, that would be the most memorable and beautiful moment for me.

What’s the worst travel experience?

Being stalked at midnight in Ibiza and just about dying in Indonesia.  I try to make bad experiences into positive learning moments, but the Ibiza nightmare was plain scary.

Your ultimate travel tip?

Don’t expect things to go right, because when they don’t you will get stressed.  If you miss that train or flight there will always be another one.  There will always be people who are willing to help you if you get stuck.  Don’t plan so much and just go with the flow!
